Break the back of summer

Some tourist operators may have had a break during February, March signals a time where the operator is  back at work and seeking business for later in the year.Whitsundays, Airlie Beach, the heart of the Great Barrier Reef sees itself as a year round tourist spot, which is different to short tourist seasons known to Europe. This means that March is considered a “shoulder” near peak month for tourism.

Atmosphere

Numbers in town will still add up to relatively low numbers, with the exception of a March Easter. This makes for ready availability of beds, boat and restaurant seats. Expect a good one outside holiday peaks.

Weather

The weather begins to “dry” during March. Periods of regular rain in January and February ease during the month of March making for more regular days of sunshine or at least days with out rain. The temperatures also ease back from Summer highs in the thirties to days in the high twenties or early thirties.

Nights will be regularly enjoyable, ideal for experiences the bar and restaurant scene.

Accommodation costs

March in Airlie Beach comes with an expectation of growing tourist numbers and thus, specials reduce in frequency. This is not to say that a bargain can’t be found, you are just going to have to look harder. It holidaying in the Whitsundays later in the year, its probably a good time to book forward for peak times. The exception is a March Easter, which will see operators focus on money making in a peak time.

Risks

Risky marine life starts to make departure during March. That is not to say that risk is removed, but it certainly reduced. Dangerous jellyfish are still around, so pay attention to marine operator instruction is important along with the use of the otherwise helpful stinger suit. Never enter the water as a tourist with out consideration of warnings or instructions.

March summary

March is the real start for the year for tourism operators. There are more people in town which makes for a fun vibe, but expect prices to reflect a time of success for operators. Better weather and less risk.
